ABBATEGGIO - PESCARA PROVINCE

A small town of 392 inhabitants, located in the National Park to the north of the Majella mountains.  It is 450 metres above sea level and offers panoramas from the Gran Sasso massif to the Adriatic Sea. It also has the prestigious title of ‘I Borghi più belli d’Italia’ - The beautiful boroughs of Italy.

The first documents, relating to the existence of a settlement, date back to the 9th century and the relaxing town is characterised by enchanting narrow lanes and stone houses. The nearby Giumentina valley, which was inhabited during the Palaeolithic Age, is one of the most important archaeological sites in Abruzzo.  It is also dotted with the peculiar ‘tholoi’ or stone huts, which were used by shepherds for shelter, whilst tending their sheep.

Abbateggio is famed for spelt production and there is a festival, each August, to celebrate this locally grown grain.  Olives, vines and fruit trees are also cultivated, and both cheese and honey are a speciality. The town even has a delightful shop dedicated to selling cheeses from the local neighbourhood.

The surrounding area offers lots of outdoor activities including hiking, cycling, climbing, horse riding, skiing, and bird watching.
