CHIETI - CHIETI PROVINCE
Chieti is both a city and capital of one of Abruzzos’ four provinces. It even has the same name. The town boasts spectacular surroundings and lies on a panoramic hill set between the Majella mountains and the Adriatic. It is at a height of 330 metres above sea level and the profile of the San Giustino Cathedral, with its high bell tower, is recognisable from many kilometres away.
Chieti is one of Italy’s most ancient cities, dating to the 4th millennium BC. It then developed as a Roman City and later as an important medieval centre with Roman and medieval ruins side by side. The city is now divided into the upper, historic town and the rapidly developing industrial and commercial area, in the valley below, known as Chieti Scalo.
The population of 50,646 has access to all facilities including a university and hospital. There are also many schools, banks, shops and restuarants to choose from. Transport links to Pescara are good (only 15 minutes by car) and the train line from Rome to Pescara also stops in Chieti Scalo. There are frequent buses from the station to Chieti Alta.
The old town is compact and easily seen on foot. It is dotted with churches, museums, attractive civic architecture and enchanting piazzas. So much to admire.
Not to be missed is an impressive event, which is held each Good Friday, and is considered Italy’s oldest religious procession. It marks the start of Holy Week.
