SAN VITO CHIETINO/MARINA DI SAN VITO - CHIETI PROVINCE
San Vito Chietino is on a delightful ridge that is 122 metres above sea level. It extends towards the Adriatic Sea and offers breathtaking views of the coast as well as the mountains of the Majella and Gran Sasso. The beaches are enclosed by rocks and there are several magnificent examples of trabocchi, some that are still used as fishing platforms.
The town has a very interesting historic centre, with ancient buildings which are adorned with decorative motifs from different eras. With the advent of the Adriatic railway, the village of Marina di San Vito developed along the coast and is now a lively tourist resort.
The 5,372 inhabitants have all facilities including banks, post offices, shops, chemists and bars. The restaurants, including converted trabocchi, specialise in fish to meet all budgets.
Each year there are several noteworthy events including the ‘Feast of Madonna del Porto’ with a traditional parade of boats. This takes place each May. In August there is the ‘Festival of Fried Fish’ and in July there is the celebration of ‘Zucotto’ a cake made with sponge, Alchermes liqueur, hazelnut and trifle ice cream.
