ORTONA - CHIETI PROVINCE
Ortona’s strategic position on the Adriatic coast has meant two things. Firstly, it has been ransacked throughout history by invading armies and secondly, it has now developed into one of the largest commercial and industrial ports in the Adriatic.
The renowned ‘Battle of Ortona’ took place in 1943 during World War II, between the Nazis and Allied troops, mainly Canadian. This hand-to-hand fighting caused much damage to the town and just to the south is a Commonwealth War Cemetery.
In spite of this, Ortona is a pleasing seaside resort with many shops, bars and restaurants to cater for its 24,013 inhabitants. There is also a weekly market which is held every Thursday, in the town centre.
It is close to the delightful 'Trabocchi' coast and Ortona's Aragon Castle, built in 1448. Both are worth a visit.
