ALTINO - CHIETI PROVINCE
The town is located on a rocky spur which dominates the valley of the Aventino river. It is 345 above sea level and the views extend to the Adriatic coast, in an area dotted with small towns and villages. The upper part of the valley is rich in farms and orchards while the lower part is cultivated with vineyards and olive trees.
The original settlement dates back to the Middle Ages and is laid out like a typical fortified town. It starts in front of the parish church, with a steep climb, which has access to the various terraces. The old fortress was probably on the site of the existing baronial palace. The church and palace are the town’s most important structures.
An important festival is the famous ‘Altino Sweet Pepper Sagre’, held in August. The red horn-shaped peppers are used in countless local dishes as the main ingredient, or, ground into a powder and used as a seasoning, similar to paprika. The menu during the festival is always extensive and very good – not to be missed.
There are 2,879 people in Altino, served by a Post Office, banks, butcher, bakery, minimarket, restaurants and bars.
