FOSSACESIA - CHIETI PROVINCE
The town of Fossacesia is in southeastern Abruzzo with two separate settlements. One is on a hilltop left of the Sangro river whilst the other Fossacesia Marina is along the Adriatic near the picturesque Punta del Cavallucio Bay.
It was a place already inhabited in pre-roman and Roman periods and Fossacesia owes its development to the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere, a Benedictine complex built on the remains of an ancient pagan temple.
Green olive groves and vines fill the valley down to the deep blue Adriatic Sea and there is a festival, each year (in December), which celebrates olive oil, wine and the typical ‘plates’ of Fossacesia. There are also evening concerts to enjoy.
The main town is 142 metres above sea level and the population of 6,500 has many services to choose from, including food shops, beauticians, hairdressers, clothes stores, pharmacies, banks and several post offices. There is a weekly market, in the town centre, every Friday.
Today the town is located along the Costa dei Trabbochi, a popular seaside destination that combines relaxation and history. Seafood is important and some of the Trabbochi have become important restaurants serving delicious fish and shellfish. After a wonderful meal enjoy the evening in Fossacesia which has become a lively summer location for nightlife, aimed at all ages.
