SANTO STEFANO DI SESSANIO - L’AQUILA PROVINCE
The beautiful hill town of Santo Stefano di Sessano, in the highest region of the Apennines, is located in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. This medieval town is adjacent to the high plain of Campo Imperatore and is 1251 metres above sea level. Its narrow alleys and stone houses, many dating back to the 15th century, has aided its position in belonging to the prestigious classification of ‘The most beautiful villages of Italy’.
The village’s main source of income is tourism with small boutiques, art galleries and eateries tucked into ancient stone structures. Being less than two hours from Rome this small village has become a fashionable weekend and summer retreat. It is also famous for its hotel which includes many properties throughout the village.
Santo Stefano di Sessano is recognised by the Slow Food movement for its gourmet lentils ‘lenticchie’. In fact, the village hosts an annual festival, on the first weekend in September, to celebrate this food ‘La sagra delle lenticchie’.
Activities include hiking, mountain and rock climbing, horse back riding, hang-gliding, kite flying, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and snow shoeing.
