COCULLO - L’AQUILA PROVINCE
The small, pretty community of Cocullo nestles in the heart of the Abruzzo region and overlooks the river Pezzana which is a tributary of the Saggitario. It is at an altitude of 897 metres and is a strategic passageway between the mountains that separate the Marsica from the Peligna Valley. Cocullo is one of the most interesting villages in the region due to its former architecture.
The ancient, fortified village is still dominated by its gates and at the highest point the houses cluster around the remains of the castle.
The population of 228 is served by one local bar with supermarkets, shops and facilites about 10 kms away, by car.
The village is most famous for its annual ‘Festa dei Serpari’, held each May. It is a four-hundred-year-old tradition that celebrates the Patron Saint of Snakes and supposedly protects the village from bites. The highlight of the festival is the procession of the Statue of San Domenica which is adorned with live snakes. They are captured in the weeks proceeding the event and then released into the wild after the festival. The celebrations attract tourists not only from Italy but also from the rest of the world.
