Serramonacesca is a small village situated at 280 metres above sea level in the Maiella National Park. It is near the River Alento, in front of Mount Piano di Tericca, and surrounded by beautiful woods, mountains and olive groves.
The village is particularly well known for the presence of religious and fortified monuments. These include the ‘Abbey of San Libertatore in Maiella’ one of the most ancient Benedictine convents of Abruzzo; the ‘Hermitage of San Onoforio’, a small church built into rocky cliffs, attracting pilgrims each year, and the remains of ‘Castle Menardo’ which provides a stunning view of the area and rooftops of the town.
The population of 534 is served by a couple of bars, two restaurants, two convenience stores, butcher, chemist and post office.
For lovers of nature and outdoor activities, the National Park offers canoeing, kayaking, cycling, fishing, hiking, biking, climbing and snow sports.
Serramonacesca is in an ideal location as the airport, Adriatic coast and skiing are all a short drive away.
