CASTIGLIONE MESSER MARINO - CHIETI PROVINCE
An extremely picturesque town, set on a slope at 1,081 metres above sea level. The present settlement dates to the middle ages and a trace of the ancient surrounding wall remains on the north side near Porta Sant’ Angelo. There are some noble mansions, worthy of note, to admire and the town is well known for its local artisans who were, in the past, famous for their woodwork and stone carving.
Castiglione Messer Marino is the home of the ‘Oasi Naturale Abetina di Selva Grande’, managed by the WWF. This site which measures 800 hectares includes a rare silver fir wood, beech forest and grazing area which is crossed by the Atelata-Birferno sheep track. There are hiking trails, picnic areas and the ancient Church of Santa Maria del Monte to enjoy.
The town has a population of 1,745 and has food shops, restaurants, bars, post office, bank and pharmacy. There is also a popular weekly market selling local produce. The stalls are set up each Friday.
The town is also the birthplace of racing car driver Juan Manuel’s father, Loreto Fangio.
