LAMA DEI PELIGNI - CHIETI PROVINCE
Lama dei Peligni is a small mountain village that embraces the slopes on the eastern edge of the Majella National Park. This welcoming village allows many traditions to be experienced by all, from gastronomy to unspoiled nature.
Located at an altitude of 670 metres, its prehistoric origins are supported by the discovery of a neolithic village. In the Middle Ages the area was characterised by the presence of religious recluses and saints. At this time surrounding hermitages were built. The town then developed, during the Renaissance period, in the field of wool production although Lama dei Peligni was more recently damaged through natural disasters and the Second World War.
The village is famous for the delicious dessert ‘sfogliatella’. This shell shaped pasty is filled with grape jam, amarena cherries, walnuts and cacao. Every year there is a competition amongst the locals accompanied by folk music and dancing.
There are local places to visit including the Botanical Garden dedicated to the flora of Abruzzo with 500 species of plants; the Abruzzo Chamois Reserve where animals recovering from injury are kept, before being released into the wild and the Grotto del Cavallone (Cave of Cavallone), found high within the National Park, with impressive views and reached by a panoramic cable car, journey.
For the active there are breathtaking trails for hiking, horseback riding and biking.
The village has a population 1,155 and there are a few services including food shops, post office, bank, newsagent, bars and restaurants. During the summer months there is an outdoor swimming pool to take advantage of the Abruzzo sun. It is perfect for relaxation and taking a cooling dip.
