CIVITELLA CASANOVA - PESCARA PROVINCE
The town of Civitella Casanova lies along the crest of a hill, at an altitude of 400 metres, near the confluence of the rivers Schiavone and Festina. It is in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park which is the perfect spot for nature lovers, with a wealth of flora and fauna to discover. The town has nearly 2,000 inhabitants and is the most populous of the foothill towns of the Gran Sasso.
The old town retains much of its ancient structure and there are many traditions, culinary events and torchlight processions, celebrated each year. There are many structures of architectural note to admire. These include both churches and palaces together with the ruins of a Roman aqueduct, floors of Roman houses and a nearby, fortified, castle. The town boasts a public swimming pool and has numerous facilities including bars, mini-markets, post office, butcher and restaurants including the Michelin starred ‘La Bandiera’.
The immediate area is surrounded by the cultivation of olive trees. The harvested olives are used in the production of extra-virgin olive oil which is renowned for excellent and natural qualities, due to its position in the foothills, away from pollution and contamination.
For food lovers, it is worth noting that Civitella is considered the home of Abruzzo’s most famous dish ‘arrosticini’ (skewered, salted lamb), which can be sampled at nearby restaurants.
