PENNAPIEDIMONTE - CHIETI PROVINCE
A charming village built on the rocky slopes of the Maiella at an altitude of 669 metres. It overlooks the ‘Tre Grotte’ Valley on one side, with a commanding view of mountain peaks rising to 2,700 metres, and the Adriatic Sea on the other. There is a panoramic point at the top of town that is reached by small, roads often constructed with steep stairs.
Some of the houses are dug out of the rock and finished with local stone. Pennapiedimonte was renowned, in the past, for its master stonemasons. A prominent feature of its architecture is the finely worked stone that adorn windows, doors and balconies with interesting sculptures of fruit, animals and faces.
The village has a small population of 464 which is served by a post office, grocery shop, restaurants and bars. The much larger town of Guardiagrele is 9 kms away and boasts many facilities.
Pennapiedimonte offers outdoor enthusiasts many hiking trails that require steep climbing and being in the national park, there are plenty of flora and fauna to discover.
